Festivals and rituals, the Hindu way have their own significance in one's spiritual evolution. Varamahalakshmi Vrata is one of the most important festivals apart from Navratri, that is attributed to Devi, Mahalakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, bestows, wealth, prosperity and good health. She is the Goddess of auspiciousness.

The Varamahalakshi pooja which is a beginning of the new festive season as per the Hindu almanac was observed everywhere in Karnataka with pomp and gaiety. It is an occasion to welcome the goddess of wealth into the house and into the society with the bounty of the season -money, gold, jewelry, material possessions and several other things that human beings need in their day to day life.

Varamahalakshmi vrita or pooja as it is called is celebrated more vividly in old Mysore area (including Bangalore) with religious fervour. On this day which usually falls in August with a variation of 5-6 days during the third week of August, devotees mainly upper caste Hindus hold special poojas to the goddess of wealth.

Eight petals of a lotus flower is drawn on which the Kalash is to be placed. The Kalash in which the Goddess is invoked is filled with rice or water, in the mouth of which fresh mango leaves are arranged with a coconut topping it. The Kalash is then worshipped as the symbol of Goddess Lakshmi.

The Thulsi plant, also a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped. Women observe a fast the whole day. At the culmination of the pooja, the water from the Kalash is sprinkled all over the house or the rice is mixed with the rice stored for cooking.

In the evening, elaborate pujas are carried out. Women from other households are invited and presented with a blouse, turmeric, glass bangles, flowers and kumkum (Vermilion) etc which are all symbols of auspiciousness.

Observing the Varalakshmi Puja invokes the Goddess' blessings in the form of auspiciousness, health, wealth, prosperity, progeny and the longevity of the husband's life. Unmarried women seek the blessings of the Goddess to be blessed with a good and virtuous husband.
